日: sun; day; Japan. JLPT N5; 4 strokes.
日 means 'sun' and 'day'; it is used for dates and days of the week and, as an abbreviation, for Japan (日米=にちべい, Japan and the United States).
On readings: ニチ in 毎日 (まいにち, every day), 日曜日 (にちようび, Sunday), 一日 (いちにち, a day). ジツ in 本日 (ほんじつ, today, formal), 休日 (きゅうじつ, day of rest), 平日 (へいじつ, weekday), 先日 (せんじつ, the other day).
Kun readings: ひ is the noun 'day' and 'sun': 日の出 (ひので, dawn), 朝日 (あさひ, morning sun), 日付 (ひづけ, date). In compound it becomes び: 曜日 (ようび, day of the week), 誕生日 (たんじょうび, birthday). か is used to count days and tell dates: 二日 (ふつか), 三日 (みっか), 十日 (とおか), 二十日 (はつか).
Special readings: 今日 (きょう, today), 明日 (あした, tomorrow), 昨日 (きのう, yesterday) and 一日 (ついたち, the first of the month) are read as whole words, without following the readings of the individual kanji. 日本 is read にほん or にっぽん.
Remember: all days of the week have the form 〜曜日, from 月曜日 (げつようび, Monday) to 日曜日 (にちようび, Sunday).
