Study notes

長 means 'long', in space and time, and in compounds 'head, responsible'.

On readings: チョウ as suffix for those who direct: 社長 (しゃちょう, president of a company), 校長 (こうちょう, principal), 部長 (ぶちょう, head of department), 市長 (しちょう, mayor).

Kun readings: ながい (長い, long): 長い髪 (long hair), 長い間 (at length). なが in 長袖 (ながそで, long sleeves), 長年 (ながねん, many years), 長靴 (ながぐつ, boots). おさ, 'head', is archaic.

Special readings: 長閑 (のどか, calm, serene) is read as whole word.
