Study notes

百 is the number one hundred; per extension it also indicates 'very many'.

After some numbers the sound changes: 三百 (さんびゃく) uses ビャク, 六百 (ろっぴゃく) and 八百 (はっぴゃく) use ぴゃく.

It has no common kun readings.

Special readings: 八百屋 (やおや, greengrocer) and 百合 (ゆり, lily) are read as whole words.

Remember: in front of 科 and 貨 the reading ヒャク becomes ひゃっ, as in 百貨店 and 百科事典.
