年: year; age. JLPT N5; 6 strokes.
年 means 'year' and, by extension, 'age'; it is added to numbers both for a year of the calendar (2026年) and for a duration (三年, three years).
On readings: ネン in 来年 (らいねん, next year), 去年 (きょねん, last year), 少年 (しょうねん, boy), 年金 (ねんきん, pension), 一年 (いちねん, one year).
Kun reading: とし is the noun 'year' and 'age': 年を取る (としをとる, to grow old), 年上 (としうえ, older), 年下 (としした, younger), 年寄り (としより, old; delicate term, the polite form is お年寄り). 毎年 is read both まいとし and まいねん.
Special readings: 今年 (ことし, this year) and 一昨年 (おととし, two years ago) are read as whole words.
Remember: in compound とし can become どし, as in 閏年 (うるうどし, leap year).
