Study notes

出 expresses the idea of going out or making something go out: from the exit of a building (出口) to the departure of a journey (出発).

On readings: シュツ in 出発 (しゅっぱつ, departure), 出席 (しゅっせき, presence), 出身 (しゅっしん, origin, place of origin), 輸出 (ゆしゅつ, exportation); before certain sounds it becomes しゅっ. スイ is extremely rare and appears in 出納 (すいとう, cash inflows and outflows).

Kun readings: でる (出る) is intransitive, 'go out, appear'; だす (出す) is transitive, 'pull out, send, deliver'. Other words: 出口 (でぐち, exit), 出前 (でまえ, home delivery), 引き出し (ひきだし, drawer), 見出し (みだし, title). As a second element of a verb, 〜出す indicates the sudden start of an action: 泣き出す (なきだす, burst into tears).

Remember: 出る and 出す form a typical intransitive and transitive verb pair: 家を出る (go out of the house), 手紙を出す (send a letter). 出口 opposes 入口 (いりぐち, entrance).
