Study notes

入 expresses entering and putting inside.

On readings: ニュウ in 入学 (にゅうがく, admission to a school), 入院 (にゅういん, hospitalization), 輸入 (ゆにゅう, importation), 入力 (にゅうりょく, data input), 収入 (しゅうにゅう, income).

Kun readings: はいる (入る, to enter) is the common intransitive verb (部屋に入る, to enter a room; お風呂に入る, to take a bath). いれる (入れる, to put inside, to insert) is transitive (砂糖を入れる, to add sugar). いる is the old reading of 入る and survives in fixed words and expressions: 入口 (いりぐち, entrance), 気に入る (きにいる, to like), 恐れ入る (おそれいる, to be mortified; to be grateful).

Remember: 入口 (いりぐち, entrance) and 出口 (でぐち, exit) are on signs of buildings and stations. The same kanji is read はいる in the simple verb but いる in 気に入る.
